Prof. Peter Simpson will assume the role of Associate Vice-Provost for the School fo Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) starting in July, 2012.
Peter will have primary responsibility for graduate programs in the Faculties of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and Dentistry, as well as for postdoctoral scholars.
A group of researchers in China have developed a way to use air guns in earthquake research. Setting off the devices triggers seismic waves that can be studied to learn more about the underlying rock formations. This should be particularly useful in fault regions.
Dr Gordon Osinski will be the acting Director of the Centre for Planetary Science and Space Exploration for the period Jan. 1, 2012 until June 30, 2012.
NASA’s GRAIL mission has recently returned its first pictures from the far side of the moon. The mission is connected with an outreach project designed to interest American elementary school students in science, space and space exploration.

This stunning picture is what resulted when a group of astronomers and NASA pointed the Hubble Space Telescopeat a galaxy 10 billion light-years away. Its remarkable clarity is because of a relativistic effect called gravitational lensing, which in this case really acts like a magnifying glass. The galaxy in question, in the galaxy cluster RCS2 032727-132623, is the brightest distant magnified galaxy ever seen, and is very actively forming stars.
