“Black Holes in Globular Clusters”
ABSTRACT
Hundreds of stellar-mass black holes are expected to form in the early lifetime of a typical globular star cluster, but nearly all are expected to be ejected over short timescales. The existence of black holes in globular clusters would have broad implications for the demography of black holes, gravitational wave sources, and the evolution of globular clusters. I will discuss the use of deep radio continuum data, taken with the upgraded Very Large Array, to search for stellar and intermediate-mass black holes in Milky Way globular clusters.
Phin Perquin is the recipient of the Dean’s Special Award of Merit for 2012.
Department Chair Shantanu Basu stated that this award was given to recognize Phin’s extended service to the Department and Faculty and noted that this is a rare award that is handed out only in occasional years.
As well, Shantanu added that, “Phin has been a staff member in the Department for 36 years, bringing experience and wisdom to many roles over the years, including that of Department Renovations Coordinator the past few years. There were many competing interests that Phin had to manage, and the beautiful result is visible to all.”
If you look up, waaay up, when passing by the Physics and Astronomy building these days you may notice subtle changes.
Some of the historical building sculpted gargoyles had seen better days and indeed were crumbling and deteriorating beyond hope.
As part of the building renovations, a local stone sculptor was commissioned to replace some of the gargoyles with the likenesses of our Movember team, The Physics Phuzzy Lips.
