The Department of Physics and Astronomy presented a hands-on display at SLOME 2012. Winners in 2011, this year the display came away with an Honourable Mention award.
The intrepid group of volunteers were Matt Abado, William Choi, Peter Frank, Allison Hill, Cameron Hopkins, Viatrix Lee, Daniel Martire (shown in photo), Roger Odell, and Melanie Wright.

Join us from 8:45am until 2:00pm at the North Campus building and several adjoining buildings, as 735 students from 21 schools take on this year’s Science Olympics challenges.
Emily McCullough, PhD Candidate in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the Northern Science Training Program Malcolm Ramsay Memorial Award from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada.
Prof. Carol Jones is in a very select group of researchers from Western University and The University of Toronto who will take part in a research exchange between Canada and Brazil.
Dr. Jones’ project is titled, “Probing the Physical Characteristics of the Disks Surrounding the Stars”. This research will be done at both Western and The University of São Paolo.
Prof. Martin Houde has been named a co-Principal Investigator on the SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) science mission.
Martin will be involved in polarimetric measurement being taken with the HAWC (High-Resolution Airborne Wideband Camera) device, and he is the only Canadian scientist involved in the mission.
I have waited a lifetime to use that pun.
The real story concerns the crushed beetle red dye which Starbucks will be dropping from its list of colouring agents.

There will be a free public lecture in Conron Hall (University College 224) at 5:30 pm. on Friday, April 13, 2012.
The guest speaker is Dr. Frans Pretorius of Princeton University. The talk is titled “Black Holes and Gravitational Waves“.
A Theoretical Physics Workshop is being held all day Friday, April 13, 2012 in the Physics and Astronomy building.
Registration is at 9:00am in PAB 22. Talks begin at 9:30am.
Interested students who are not on the participants list are welcome to attend and listen to the talks.

I thought that the posting I read this morning regarding the quick decision to proceed directly to Phase V of building renovations to be a joke.
That was until I saw the mass evictions taking place with my own eyes.

The Faculties of Engineering, Science, and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University have organized the Western Research Showcase providing an opportunity for partnerships and networking between industry and university researchers. This year, the showcase has encompassed more than 45 research displays within the Great Hall from Western’s Research groups with most involvement in research partnerships with industry and technological transfer. Prof. Blaine Chronik and Prof. Giovanni Fanchini participated for our Department.
